ISTITUTO COMPRENSIVO STATALE “SAN GIOVANNI BOSCO”
Our school is a public comprehensive school, with students both at primary and secondary level, aged from 3 to 14. About 500 of the students attend the secondary school, where there are 60 teachers. The school is in Isernia, a small town with a population of approx 20000 inhabitants, in the centre- south of Italy. The students who attend our school are mainly from Isernia but quite a few commute from the nearby villages and towns. There are also several foreign students who have moved here in the past years with their families. The pupils come from different social backgrounds: many students come from wealthy families with good jobs, others live with unemployed parents but the majority of the pupils have at least one working parent. There are quite a few students with special needs in the school. Some of them are affected by illnesses like autism, others have personality disorders like hyper activeness and some have learning or reading difficulties such as dyslexia. There are all very well integrated into their classes and into the school in general. Several of these students as well as other students with fewer opportunities will take part in the project, which, as always, will focus on the principal of inclusive education, group work and socialization and this makes us very interested on working on a European project because it gives the students the opportunity to increase their awareness as European citizens and they can enhance their common values without forgetting their diversities. This is our third European project . We have had experience both in a Comenius project and in an Erasmus+ project. All the language teachers will probably take part, at some stage, in the activities. Our students are enthusiastic about learning languages, especially English, because of the ever increasing importance of it as means of international communication and the massive exposure to it in many daily activities. We are also greatly motivated on working on this specific project because there is a huge awareness in our school about the environment and our natural resources and the importance of preserving them. Lessons, seminars, conferences and many other different activities regarding the correct attitude to maintain in order to avoid permanent damage to the environment are carried out by the science teachers, who will be key figures in this project. We also have several teachers with excellent ICT skills and most of these teachers will be working on the project. Our students are very competent in using computers, especially the most widely used software and programs. Digital resources are a key part of learning activities in our school, as well as being a vital resource for students with dyslexia. All the members of staff are qualified in supporting and teaching students with special educational needs. We have all done compulsory training over the years.
