FRANCE – WASTE MODULE

COLLEGE HONORE D’URFE

Our school is located in Saint-Etienne, in the Rhône-Alpes, Auvergne region, at about one hour drive from Lyon, the third biggest city in France. There are about 178,000 inhabitants. Our school is a secondary school where there are about 900 students aged between 10 and 16. There are about 60 teachers, a headmaster, a deputy head master, a nurse, a social worker, 2 school advisors, a career counselor and 10 wardens who are in charge of the students’ school attendance and well-being. We also have students with special needs: foreign students (lately a lot of students have migrated from Africa, North Africa, Italy, Spain and Eastern Europe), dyslexic students. There’s also a therapeutic department for children suffering from psychological and serious behavioral problems as a well as a newly-open department for students with intellectual disabilities. Up to 6 languages (German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, English) are taught, including French as a second language. Our students come from different social backgrounds. There’s every race, religion and culture within the confines of the quad. Our school has just been rebuilt and the school community benefit from a pleasant school environment. We have also put a great emphasis on ICT devices. Our school has been involved in various environmental projects. In fact, the building in the first place, is “eco-friendly”, as our school has been labelized as “ecologically friendly”. A humanity teacher has been in charge of the environment policy of the school for many years along with a biology teacher and they have organized environmental events within the school such as : recycling bottle caps to raise money for charities, she organized a ‘recycling ’ event and the students made “recycling disposal boxes” to be used in all the school classrooms. The students were also involved in charity associations and collected old school supplies to help a little girl suffering from a severe disease. Therefore, such a project is relevant to the school environmental policy enforced for many years but also because climate change has been affecting our lives these past years. Besides, we would like to enhance and raise a sense of European Citizenship among our students, with a meaningful project that will enable them to live up to their dreams while taking a stand for our planet. Eventually, It is also an opportunity to enhance team-work among teachers and exchange some cross-curricular educational practices with our European partners-to-be.
