SWEDEN – CLIMATE MODULE

HEDDA WISINGSKOLAN

Hedda Wisingskolan is located in Härnösand, 4-5 hours north of Stockholm, where the effects of global warming on the climate are observable on the Baltic Sea level. The school started in 2016, composited of two different schools. It´s a secondary school for students of 12-16. Hedda Wisingskolan employs 50 employees and it´s attended by 370 students, divided into 12 classes. All students study English and from the sixth grade they can choose one more language (German, French or Spanish). Among these students there are 58 with fewer opportunities, some of them in a special department for children with special needs (autism spectrum). We also have a lot of newcomers, app 17% (most of them come from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Somalia and Eritrea – all kinds of race, culture and religion). These circumstances generate social exclusion and alienation. Last year all staff took part in an in-service training with focus being better at meeting the needs of all students, develop a more inclusive education. It was performed as seminars on different topics where colleagues had time to discuss, plan and test special education methods on every day classrooms situations. But there is a lot more to do! To join this project you get lots of possibilities to learn other´s culture, understand each other better and work against radicalism. In our school all students have a computer. Students, and all staff get “in house training” in ICT. We use ICT in our communication and work and all educational materials are web-based. We recently started to work with a new digital LMS (Learning Management System). Because of this common use of ICT, we want to raise awareness how students can use ICT in a sustainable way. It´s important for the students to know how to handle social environment problems, but there is also important to handle physical environments problems to feel included in reacting against Climate change. A sustainable way of living includes both physical and mental health. The project will involve all students (included socially and economically disadvantaged and students with physical or mental disabilities).  We have never participated in any Erasmus projects before which encourages to be a part of this project and gain experience from the other partners.
